Murder by the Book

1955

It is six months since the events of Death on Swift Wings, and Gertrude Harrington becomes involved in a new mystery.

When one of her sisters mentions a recently reported murder at a Bed and Breakfast in the hamlet of Little Sleeping, it becomes clear to Gertrude that the scenario resembles a death in one of the murder mysteries written by Lavinia Rushbrook.

Lavinia is the owner of Templemead Hall, where Gertrude was once Head Cook. Lavinia is also someone Gertrude hoped never to meet again because of a death that occurred at Templemead Hall during her tenure.

But when more murders occur, each resembling another from Lavinia’s novels, it becomes clear that a copycat killer is at large.

A death too close to home forces Gertrude into a meeting with her ex-employer in order to find a motive for the deaths. It is a meeting that reopens old wounds which Gertrude had thought healed.

Will the pain of the past help or hinder Gertrude in her quest for the truth, and will she and her friend, Chief Inspector Lennox, find the killer before there is another murder?
